Passport Photo Maker

Turn any photo into a correctly sized passport or visa photo — 2×2 in for the US, 35×45 mm for the UK, EU and Australia, and more — with guide lines for head size and a ready-to-print sheet. Nothing is uploaded.

How to use the Passport Photo Maker

  1. Choose the photo size for your document, such as US passport 2×2 in or UK passport 35×45 mm.
  2. Drop in a photo taken against a plain, light background, facing the camera.
  3. Drag the photo and use the zoom slider until the top of the head touches the red line and the chin sits inside the green band. Use Straighten if the head is tilted.
  4. Download the single photo for an online application, or the print sheet to print at a photo kiosk at actual size.

About this tool

Passport and visa photos are rejected far more often for size and framing than for anything else: a head that is too small, too large or not centred. This tool fixes the frame to the official dimensions and draws the rule that matters most — the head-height range, measured from the chin to the top of the head — as guide lines over your photo. Line the head up with them and the proportions are right by construction.

The finished photo is rendered at 300 pixels per inch, the resolution photo printers and most online application portals expect: 600×600 pixels for a 2×2 inch US photo, 413×531 for 35×45 mm. The file also records 300 DPI, so it prints at the correct physical size when you choose “actual size”. The print sheet packs as many copies as fit onto standard 4×6 inch (10×15 cm) photo paper or an A4 page, with thin cutting lines, so one inexpensive photo print gives you a full set.

What this tool does not do is replace the background or judge your expression. Take the photo against a plain white or off-white wall in even light, face the camera with a neutral expression and both eyes open, and remove glasses if your country requires it. Requirements change and differ between documents, so check the official guidance for your application before you print. Your photo never leaves your device — it is cropped and saved entirely in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a passport photo?

It depends on the country. US passports and visas use 2×2 inches (51×51 mm). The UK, the Schengen area, most of the EU and Australia use 35×45 mm. Canada uses 50×70 mm and a Chinese visa 33×48 mm. Choose your document in the size list and the frame and head guides change to match.

How big should my head be in the photo?

Each country sets a range from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head: 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) for a US photo, 29–34 mm for a UK passport and 32–36 mm for the EU and Australia. The red line and green band show that range — put the top of your head on the line and your chin inside the band.

What pixel size should a digital passport photo be?

Most portals accept a 300 DPI image of the correct proportions: 600×600 pixels for a 2×2 inch photo, or 413×531 for 35×45 mm. That is what the single-photo download produces. Some portals set their own pixel size or file-size limit; if yours has a size limit, run the photo through the image compressor for a target size afterwards.

How do I print passport photos at home or at a shop?

Download the print sheet and print it on 4×6 inch (10×15 cm) photo paper, or on A4, at actual size / 100% — never “fit to page”, which would shrink every photo. Then cut along the grey lines.

Can this tool change my background to white?

No. Removing a background convincingly needs specialised software and would mean uploading your photo. Take the photo against a plain light wall instead — it gives a better result than any background replacement.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The photo is read, cropped and saved by your own browser. Nothing is sent to a server, which matters for a picture of your face that will go on an identity document.
