Add Page Numbers to PDF

Number the pages of any PDF — choose the position, the style (1, Page 1, Page 1 of 10) and where numbering starts, so a cover page can stay blank. The PDF is processed in your browser, never uploaded.

🔒 This tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter or upload is sent to our servers.

How to use the Add Page Numbers to PDF

  1. Drop a PDF onto the box, or click to choose it.
  2. Choose where the numbers go and how they look, such as bottom centre and “Page 1 of 10”.
  3. To leave a cover or contents page unnumbered, set the page numbering starts on; set the first number if the count should begin somewhere other than 1.
  4. Click Add page numbers and download the numbered PDF.

About this tool

Page numbers make a long document usable: people can say “see page 14”, print it without losing the order, and find their place again. If the PDF came from a scanner, a mixture of files or software that didn’t add them, this tool stamps a number onto every page in a single step.

You choose the position — top or bottom, left, centre or right — and the style, from a plain 1 to “Page 1 of 10”. Numbering can start on any page, so a cover, title page or table of contents stays clean, and the first number can be anything, which is useful when the PDF is one chapter of a larger document. Numbers are placed relative to how each page is displayed, so sideways, rotated and landscape pages get their number in the right place and the right way up.

The numbers are added as real text in the Helvetica font, so they stay sharp at any zoom and print cleanly. The rest of the document is untouched: text stays selectable, links and bookmarks keep working, and nothing is re-compressed. The whole job runs in your browser using the open-source pdf-lib library, so the document is never uploaded and there is no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF?

Drop the PDF on the box, choose the position and format, and click Add page numbers. The numbered copy is ready to download a moment later; your original file is not changed.

How do I skip the cover page?

Set “Start on page” to 2. The cover stays unnumbered and the page after it is numbered 1 — or set “First number” to 2 if you want the count to include the cover.

Can I add "Page 1 of 10"?

Yes. Choose the “Page 1 of 10” or “1 / 10” format. The total is the last number printed, so it stays correct when you skip a cover page or start from a different number.

What happens with landscape or rotated pages?

Each number is placed according to how the page is displayed, so it appears at the chosen position and reads the right way up on portrait, landscape and rotated pages alike.

Will this change the rest of my PDF?

No. Only the page numbers are added. Text, images, links and bookmarks are left exactly as they were, and nothing is re-compressed.

Does it work with password-protected PDFs?

Not with PDFs that need a password to open or that forbid editing. Remove the protection first, then add the numbers here.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. The file is read and numbered by your own browser and handed straight back. Nothing is sent to a server.
