About this tool
VAT (value added tax), GST (goods and services tax) and US sales tax are all charged as a percentage of the price, so the arithmetic is the same. Adding tax multiplies the net price by (1 + rate): £100 plus 20% VAT is £120. Removing tax divides the gross price by (1 + rate): £120 including 20% VAT is £100 net, with £20 of VAT inside it.
The common mistake is to take the rate straight off the gross price. 20% of £120 is £24, which would put the net price at £96 — wrong, because the VAT was 20% of the net price, not of the total. For a 20% rate the tax inside a VAT-inclusive price is one sixth of it; for 5% it is one twenty-first.
The rates in the list are each country’s standard rate as of 2026. Many countries also have reduced rates, often for food, books, children’s clothing or energy, and US sales tax is set by the state, county and city together, so type in the combined rate for your area. Results are rounded to the cent for display; invoices are usually rounded per line or per invoice under each country’s own rules.
Frequently asked questions
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the price by 1 plus the rate. For 20% VAT, divide by 1.2: £240 ÷ 1.2 = £200 net, so the VAT is £40. Choose “Remove tax” above and the calculator does this for any rate.
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. For 20% VAT, multiply by 1.2: £200 × 1.2 = £240. The VAT is the difference, £40.
Why can’t I just take 20% off a VAT-inclusive price?
Because the VAT was calculated on the lower, net price. Taking 20% off £120 gives £96, but the net price is £100. The VAT inside a price that includes 20% VAT is one sixth of it, not a fifth.
What is the VAT rate in the UK?
The standard rate is 20%. There is a reduced rate of 5% (for example on home energy and children’s car seats) and a zero rate on most food, books and children’s clothing.
Does this work for US sales tax?
Yes. Sales tax is calculated the same way, but the rate is the sum of the state, county and city rates where the sale happens, so there is no single national rate. Type your combined rate in the rate box.
Are the country rates up to date?
They are the standard rates as of 2026. Governments do change them, and reduced rates apply to many goods and services, so check the official rate before filing a return or issuing an invoice.
