About this tool
Coast FIRE is the point where you have invested enough that, with no further contributions, compound growth alone will carry the balance to your full retirement number by your retirement age. From then on you only need to earn enough to cover your living costs โ you can “coast”: switch to part-time work, a lower-stress job, or simply stop worrying about saving.
The math: your FIRE number is annual spending รท safe withdrawal rate (e.g. 50,000 รท 4% = 1,250,000). Discount it back to today at your real return (nominal return adjusted for inflation): Coast number = FIRE number รท (1 + real return)years to retirement. Everything is calculated in today’s money so the spending figure you enter stays meaningful.
Frequently asked questions
What return should I assume?
A diversified stock portfolio has historically returned about 7% a year after inflation is roughly 3% โ so 7% nominal with 3% inflation, or about 4% real, is a common conservative starting point. Lower assumptions give a higher, safer Coast number.
Is a 4% withdrawal rate safe?
It is the classic rule of thumb from the Trinity study for a 30-year retirement. For very early retirement many people use 3.25%โ3.5%, which raises the FIRE number by 15โ25%.
What’s the difference between Coast FIRE and Barista FIRE?
Coast FIRE means you stop contributing but keep working to cover expenses. Barista FIRE means you withdraw a little from investments and work part-time to cover the rest, before your full retirement age.
Does this include pensions or state benefits?
No. If you expect a pension or state benefit, reduce the annual spending figure by the amount it will cover.
